Retail focused owner, operator and development firm Arabian Centres has said that it plans to build an outdoor shopping centre at a prime location in Madinah City, Saudi Arabia. Boulevard U Walk will be the second addition to Arabian Centres’ portfolio of shopping centres in Madinah, following the opening of the Al Noor Mall.

According to a statement, the new mall is set to be built on the lines of its successful predecessor, the U-Walk Centre at Riyadh, which opened in September 2019.

Arabian Centres said this project aligns with its broad strategy to expand within the lifestyle shopping centers space, which includes various entertainment destinations such as cinemas, luxurious restaurants and cafes, in addition to retail stores.

In its filing to the Saudi bourse Tadawul, Arabian Centres says it has already inked a 25-year lease and investment agreement with Madinah Regional Municipality for investing in a vacant plot at the intersection of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Road and King Abdulaziz Road. The firm says the annual rental for the plot will be $268,150.

Arabian Centres said it currently has a portfolio of 21 assets strategically located in 11 major Saudi cities, and expects to add about 57,000sqm to its gross leasable areas (GLA) in the future.

Art Moore, the founder of global access equipment major Snorkel, has been inducted into the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) Hall of Fame and honoured as an industry pioneer.

The induction announcement was made during the AEM Annual Conference, held virtually from November 17-20. The digital edition featured several speakers, panels, roundtable discussions and networking events. Interviewed in the announcement video, Sue Moore, Art’s wife, shared the history behind her late husband’s innovations and the founding of Snorkel.

According to a statement from Snorkel, the AEM Hall of Fame spotlights pioneers whose inventions, ideas, leadership and courage have contributed to the industry and the community’s quality of life. The recognition also strives to instill a deeper public understanding and appreciation for the continuing role of the industry in global business success.

Nominees were considered based on their innovation, industry contributions, leadership, corporate citizen and social responsibility. Among many unique ideas developed during Art Moore’s lifetime were firefighting equipment, aluminum booms and hydraulic telescopic designs that helped solve problems critical to the off-road equipment industry.

In 1959, Moore’s development of telescopic firefighting equipment became so integral to the profession that the company name, Snorkel, would become genericised for the equipment throughout the industry.

Yet another innovation was his use of aluminum extrusions on aerial lifts. The unprecedented use of this material revolutionised the industry as it allows better functionality while weighing and costing less than comparable steel models.

Ahmed AbouAlfa, founder of UAE BIM Association (UBA), says that changing the perception of BIM in SMEs, integrated project management, implementing the right software, and developing standards are some of the ways to address critical challenges in BIM adoption.

With this first-ever Virtual Middle East BIM Summit underway, he adds that successful BIM adoption also requires a high level of collaboration among stakeholders.

AbouAlfa recommends ten actions that companies, industry organisations, and governments can adopt to accelerate BIM adoption and better capitalise on what the technology can offer.

Encourage External Influence

BIM needs to be implemented throughout the supply chain for it to reach its full potential. The lack of homogeneity of BIM adoption among SMEs is not just their responsibility, but a lack of influence from major firms too. All major constructions projects in the UAE are BIM mandated, and SMEs fall under the category of sub-contractor and sub-consultants. Major firms in the industry need to mandate BIM from their side throughout the supply chain, and in this way, SMEs that form a significant part of that sector are thereby forced to implement the technology.

Japan’s Toray Industries has said that it has been awarded orders to supply reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for the Al Dur 2 Desalination Plant in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Umm Al Quwain Desalination Plant in UAE.

The combined water production capacity of the two plants will accumulate to 911,000 cu. m per day, while the Umm Al Quwain Desalination Plant alone will hold one of the world’s largest capacities with 681,000 cu. m per day freshwater production.

The company stated that its local subsidiary Toray Membrane Middle East LLC (TMME) located in Dammam, Saudi Arabia will provide the RO membranes and technical services required for the plants.

Toray added that with further reinforcement of localisation in its strategy, its long-term focus will be to contribute to solve water shortage issues in the Middle East through TMME, which will ultimately lead to a stable energy resource supply.

Additionally, Toray’s RO element was used at Al Dur 1 Plant, and was highly recognised and acclaimed, and its ability to achieve stable operations led to the Umm Al Quwain award. Toray further stated that the demand to build RO desalination plants which consume less energy to operate as compared to thermal desalination plants is also on the rise, with the increasing awareness to reduce greenhouse gas emission.
